"Batman Begins" Sunday - June 19th, 2005

I will go on record by saying that Batman Begins is easily my favorite Batman movie. Some people might still like the original, but I find that I favor the new movie. The only aspects I give the original were that Michael Keaton had a much better "Batman" voice when he spoke as the Caped Crusader and that fight scenes were somewhat more understandable. The fight scenes are more a fault of the new movie than anything else. Just imagine a bunch of fast cuts, underlit, movement that implies someone is A. Kicking ass and B. Getting their asses kicked. Unfortunately you can never tell which is which.

However action and Christian Bale's too forced of a voice, the movie was by far the best of the Batman crop. I liked the fact that the movie wasn't trying to make this fantastic world of Gotham City. Batman Begins does is damn hardest to try and keep the city look and feel real. Then taking a cue from Spiderman, they internalized the character so that it wasn't a movie about the superhero, but a movie about the man who is the superhero. You go almost an hour before you even see Batman in his costume and while I heard some say the movie was slow because of it, I loved every minute of it. To me, you knew it was coming and the build up made it that much better when it came.

The acting was top notch all around and I couldn't even believe some of the people in the move that only had bit parts like Rutger Hauer and Morgan Freeman. Together they were in all of about 15 minutes of a two and a half hour movie. The only thing that still stuck out was Katie Holmes, but it almost gets explained through the end of why they cast a fresh face like Katie to play the love interest. I can't wait for the second one, because the foreshadowing they put at the end of this one practically had you begging the next movie was coming out soon. Again you might not have liked Batman Begins or maybe didn't think it was as good as the original... but you have to admit this did bring Batman movies back to credibility. For me watching this made me realize how cartoonish even the Tim Burton movies were.

But enough about Batman right?

Looks like Mikail wasn't kidding around when he said he could take on a goddess. The comic looked pretty good today and I hope enjoyed it. The end of this fight concludes this week as the fate of the world comes crashing down and a terrible move is made.

River decides to try on a costume.
