"Swords of ice are pretty cool" Sunday - January 16th, 2005 If you only knew how long it took me to get that last panel to look like it does now. I'm still not entirely happy about it, but hopefully it looks okay to you guys. I even broke out the fading of effects that shove is so fond of. I will say that Vase was giving me a high holy bitch of a time for this comic. For some reason I just couldn't draw him at all. Weird, but it happens sometimes. I think I drew 4 different versions of P8. Anyway, look for the continuation of Yuki's 15 minutes as we see where all this craziness is heading. You didn't think that making an ice sword was the whole point of the Full Moon technique did you? In other news I want to say that I watched Iron Chef America last night and I have to say it was okay. The original is far superior, but this wasn't bad. It was infinitely better than the IC America specials they had on a few months ago when the Iron Chefs of America beat the Iron Chefs of Japan. Yeah right. I think the big problem with this show is that with the old show you routed for the Iron Chefs because they were so cool and kick ass. They represented this Gourmet Academy and they backed up their claim with these crazy dishes. Iron Chef America suffers from the fact that you KNOW Bobby Flay and Mario Battali are not the best chefs in America. Not even close I would imagine. If they had kicked off Flay and kept Wolfgang Puck it would've been a different story. That guy was amazing and you just know Wolfgang because he's been an icon of American cuisine for decades. Anyway I won't mention the outcome of last night's battle in case you still want to catch it, but I will say it might be worth it to see how it's different. The good things were that Alton Brown is still the commentator, the Stadium looks pretty good, the Chairman isn't half as annoying, Morimoto is such a badass, he almost makes up for the fact that Flay is now his contemporary, I loved the theme ingredient they chose, the whole simultaneous website that went along with the show was really cool. To go into it further, it was a webpage that asked questions about the show, gave additional info, and polled the viewing audience and it was all done seamlessly in time with the show. Very cool. The bad things though were that the whole pageantry of the show was gone. The whole intro was lame as hell. The challenger had a 30 second intro and then walked right into the stadium while the Iron Chefs are already standing there. They don't even come up out of the ground!! Then the chairman didn't even let Bayless pick his opponent, but called out his opponent for him! I know the Japanese show sometimes chose which iron Chef would fight the challenger, but they ALWAYS made the challenger call out his name and then threw on the cool music and over the shoulder camera shot of the Iron Chef looking down at the challenger with this incredulous look of "Oh you did not just pick me, you little bitchnit." Oh and the secrete ingredient? It's sitting on this table that doesn't come out of the ground, but some pulley system pulls off the top of the tray. LAME. Oh, oh!! And the outfits the Iron Chefs wear? Out are the flashy colorful garb of the Japanese show. In are these horrible denim outfits that are the same color for all three Iron Chefs. TOTALLY LAME. So if you can get past the fact that they dropped the ball on the whole over the top presentation of the show, then you might enjoy it. I myself will watch more, but it will be with a heavy heart knowing that it could've been done so much better. I was going to talk about White Noise too, but I got distracted by this whole Iron Chef America thing... Oh well. White Noise... okay movie. Wait for The Ring 2 to see a good horror movie. It has to be good. HAS TO. Anyway that's it for now. Enjoy Martin Luther King Jr day and I'll see you all Thursday!
